It is actually quite rare for me to go out with a specific idea for a portfolio, as I generally see the sights and photograph what interests me, or catches my attention.
But on my last afternoon in Lalibela I visited the camp, where pilgrims stay during their visit, determined to take some portraits. It was an amazing sight, with families cooking up coffee and soup, with the usual array of bread and trinket salesmen doing their stuff. Within ten minutes I was surrounded by excited people queuing to have their pictures taken, I suspect some for the first time ever.
Then to the West Door of St Mary's church, open because it was a Sunday; the late afternoon sun was perfect. And the photos are pretty nifty too.
