Simien Mountains.

I vaguely remember, on my first email from Helsinki, that I would aim to keep these portfolios up to date.  Err... here's the Christmas Portfolio from the Simien Mountains.

The Simiens are spectacular to say the least.  The locals grow wheat up to 3500m on any available soil - including vertiginous hillsides, that leave you gasping for breath before you take a step.

On Christmas Day we walked up to 4500m with fabulous views of Ras Daschen, Africa's fourth highest mountain.  Our scout was on his weekly fasting day, refused a biscuit at the summit, and back at camp watched patiently as we devoured an entire sheep for Christmas Supper.  Many thanks to whoever gave me the Ethiopian hat in the 'secret santa'; I'm wearing it now.
